Hilario “Larry” Llorente Quiniano 

Larry Quiniano, aged 89, passed away peacefully at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital, in Fountain Valley, California, of kidney failure after 5 years of dialysis.

Larry was born 3 November 1932, in Dolorosa, Nabua, Camarines Sur, in the Philippines, to Pablo Baeño Quiniano and Agueda Nuñez Llorente.  His father passed away when he was 2-1/2 years old. 

All his mother’s brothers were “lifers” in the U.S. Navy.  Agueda allowed her brother, Lorenzo Llorente, to help raise little Hilario.  Agueda’s other brothers assisted as well — Faustino, Ceferino, and Felix.  Hilario lived in their various households.  He graduated from Nabua High School.  In 1953, he was encouraged by his cousin, Eusebio Nuñez Pontillas, who also lived in his Uncle Faustino’s house, to join the U.S. Navy — the start of a 24-year career.  When he became an officer, his uncles started calling him “Larry” instead. 

Larry met the love of his life of 64-1/2 years, Aurelia Agra de Lumban, at a dance at the Winter Garden of the Manila Hotel.  They married on 3 May 1958, at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in Aurelia’s town of Pila, Laguna, in the Philippines.  

Larry made their first residence at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Cubi Point, Olongapo, Zambales, Philippines, where their 1st child, Gina, was born prematurely.  Larry’s next duty station was the U.S. Navy Retraining Command in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, in the United States where their 2nd and 3rd children, Lori  and Pablo, were born.  They took residence in Kittery, Maine.  After 2 years, they moved to Middletown, Rhode Island, for 4 years.  Larry was assigned to sea duty at U.S. Naval Station, Newport, Rhode Island, where their 4th child, Melissa, was born, and where he got his U.S. citizenship in Providence, Rhode Island.  He served on board the USS Willis A. Lee (DL-4), and then on the USS Cromwell (DE-104) during the Cuban Missile Crisis on deployments operating with South American navies and when President Kennedy was assassinated.  He moved the family to Oak Harbor, Washington, where he was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island for 2 years.  Their 5th child, Hilario, Jr. (“Larry”) was born there.  He moved the family again as he was sent to attend the Navy Supply Corps School, in Athens, Georgia, where he graduated in 1968.  Larry was ready for sea duty in Long Beach, California, where he again moved the family.  He served on board the USS Yorktown (CVS-10) and was there for recovery of the Apollo 8 Command Module with astronauts Lovell, Anders, and Borman.  He was transferred to the USS Bennington as aviation stores officer, and then, assigned to shore duty at the Navy Finance Office, in Long Beach.  His last child, Joseph, was born.  A child in every station (except Athens, GA)!  This warranted settling his family into a bigger house 15 miles from Long Beach. 

Larry’s last assignment before retirement was an overseas tour to the Middle East.  He was sent to Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia as Petroleum Inspector under the Defense Supply Agency.  With Saudi Arabia unwilling to provide America with fuel, Larry made trips to Iran where Shah Reza Pahlavi provided fuel, and Larry was involved in the purchase.

After retirement, Larry completed his education at CSU Long Beach with his B.S. degrees in Accounting and Finance.  He was a self-employed CPA assisting clients with taxes and bookkeeping for small businesses.  

Larry was hardworking, stubborn, brutally frank, but with a soft heart and very giving to those in need.  He was highly respected by all who encountered him.  He was an accomplished golfer, enjoyed fishing, and watching the stock market.

Larry was survived by his wife, Aurelia; his daughters, Gina and Lori; his sons Larry Jr. and Joseph; grandchildren, Nabil Q. Fanaian, Anthony Quiniano, Jonathan Q. Lopez, Jessica Q. Lopez, Melissa Becerra, Matthew Quiniano, Kristina Gimbi Anthony, David Gimbi II, Kendall Gimbi, Trevor Gimbi, Brendan Gimbi; and, great grandchildren, Destiny Lopez, Brixton Anthony, and Logan Anthony.
